India records 45,148 COVID-19 cases, 480 deaths in 24 hours  


The health ministry on Monday informed that 45,148 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 79.09 lakh.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.19 lakh deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 480 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,19,014.

Notably, the daily death count due to COVID-19 has remained above the 500-mark for the past several days. However, it dipped below the 500-mark for the first time on October 26 when 480 deaths were reported in a day. Previously, it had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the case count has remained well past the 50,000-mark for the past few days, but dipped below the 50,000-mark for the first time on October 20 and again on October 26. However, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

71.37 lakh patients recovered

Of the 79.09 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 6.53 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is above 8 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 71.37 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 90.23 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11 due to a rapid surge in cases.

Over 10.35 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 10.35 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 9.39 lakh tests were carried out on October 25.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

480 deaths in a day

Of the 480 deaths reported in a day, 112 are from Maharashtra, 31 from Tamil Nadu and 32 from Karnataka. Twenty-one deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 60 from West Bengal and 28 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported seven deaths and Delhi 33 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 10 deaths. Punjab has reported 10 deaths.

Sixteen deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas seven deaths were reported from Bihar. Four deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Thirteen deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and eight from Jammu and Kashmir.

Four fatalities have been reported from Assam and nine from Uttarakhand. Two deaths have been reported from Puducherry. Two deaths have been reported from Jharkhand and 26 from Kerala.
