COVID-19 in India: 61,267 fresh cases reported in a day

The health ministry on Tuesday informed that 61,267 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 66.85 lakh.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.03 lakh deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 884 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,03,569.

Notably, the daily death count due to COVID-19 has remained above 800 for the past many days. However, it dipped below the 800-mark on September 29 when 776 deaths were reported. Previously, it had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the case count has remained well past the 60,000-mark for the past few days. However, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

56.62 lakh patients recovered

Of the 66.85 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 9.19 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is below 14 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 56.62 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 84.70 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11 due to a rapid surge in cases.

Over 8.10 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 8.10 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 10.89 lakh tests were carried out on October 3.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

884 deaths in a day

Of the 884 deaths reported in a day, 263 are from Maharashtra, 62 from Tamil Nadu and 84 from Karnataka. Thirty-eight deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 61 from West Bengal and 63 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported 13 deaths and Delhi 32 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 29 deaths. Punjab has reported 38 deaths.

Seventeen deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas nine deaths were reported from Bihar. Ten deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Fourteen deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and 10 from Jammu and Kashmir.

Eleven fatalities have been reported from Assam, 21 from Haryana and seventeen from Uttarakhand. Four deaths have been reported from Puducherry. Four deaths have been reported from Jharkhand and 23 from Kerala.
