Over 1.22 lakh people died due to COVID-19 in India

The health ministry on Sunday informed that 46,963 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 81.84 lakh.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.22 lakh deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 470 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,22,111.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

74.91 lakh patients recovered

Of the 81.84 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 5.70 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is below 7 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 74.91 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 91.54 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11 due to a rapid surge in cases.

Over 10.98 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 10.98 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 10.91 lakh tests were carried out on October 31.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

470 deaths in a day

Of the 470 deaths reported in a day, 74 are from Maharashtra, 31 from Tamil Nadu and 28 from Karnataka. Fourteen deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 57 from West Bengal and 18 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported five deaths and Delhi 41 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 10 deaths. Punjab has reported 16 deaths.

Twelve deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas six deaths were reported from Bihar. Five deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Nine deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and seven from Jammu and Kashmir.

Four fatalities have been reported from Assam, whereas 12 deaths have been reported from Uttarakhand. No death has been reported from Puducherry. One death has been reported from Jharkhand and 27 from Kerala.
