The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Gujarat has increased to 69 on Monday after six new cases of the virus were reported from the state. With the addition of the new cases, now Ahmedabad has 23 positive cases, followed by nine each in Vadodara, Rajkot, and Gandhinagar. Eight cases of coronavirus have been reported each from Surat and Bhavnagar has reported six cases, whereas Gir-Somnath has reported two cases. One case each has been reported from Porbandar, Kutch, and Mehsana.
Health secretary Jayanti Ravi said the new cases include a 36-year-old man in Ahmedabad with a travel history of the US, whereas all the other cases are incidents of local transmission in Bhavnagar. In Bhavnagar, all the fresh cases have been reported in men of 50-years-old and above.
The number of deaths due to coronavirus in the state has also increased to six after a 45-year-old woman with a history of stroke-related complications succumbed to the virus in Bhavnagar. With the latest development, the death toll due to COVID-19 has increased to two in Bhavnagar. The total death tally includes three in Ahmedabad, two in Bhavnagar, and one in Surat.
One of the major causes of concern for the state authorities in the growing number of COVID-19 cases reported due to local transmission. While the number of positive cases with a history of foreign travel has slowed down and almost halted, the number of COVID-19 cases with no foreign travel history is increasing at a rapid rate.
The death rate due to the virus is one of the highest in the country.
