India’s COVID-19 death toll nears 3 lakh


The health ministry on Sunday informed that over 2.40 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.65 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 19.50 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 16.04 lakh people were vaccinated on Saturday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

2.99 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 3,741 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 2,99,266. Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.34 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.65 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 28.05 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 10.57 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.34 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 88.30 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 32.66 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 32.66 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 21.23 lakh samples were tested on May 22. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 20.61 lakh samples was tested on May 20.

3,741 deaths in a day

Of the 3,741 deaths reported in a day, 682 deaths are from Maharashtra, 448 from Tamil Nadu and 451 from Karnataka. 118 deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 218 deaths and West Bengal reported 154 deaths. Gujarat reported 54 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 89 deaths. Delhi reported 182 deaths. Punjab reported 201 deaths.

Twenty-six deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 115 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 103 deaths. Forty-eight deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 21 deaths.

Seventy-nine fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 134 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 41 deaths. Puducherry reported 30 deaths and 176 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
