India’s COVID-19 death toll crosses 3 lakh, 4,454 deaths in a day


The health ministry on Monday informed that over 2.22 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.67 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 19.60 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 9.42 lakh people were vaccinated on Sunday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.03 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 4,454 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,03,720. Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.37 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.67 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 27.20 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 10.17 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.37 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 88.69 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 33.05 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 33.05 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 21.23 lakh samples were tested on May 22. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 20.61 lakh samples was tested on May 20. Over 19.28 lakh samples were tested on May 23.

4,454 deaths in a day

Of the 4,454 deaths reported in a day, 1,320 deaths are from Maharashtra, 422 from Tamil Nadu and 624 from Karnataka. 104 deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 231 deaths and West Bengal reported 156 deaths. Gujarat reported 53 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 75 deaths. Delhi reported 189 deaths. Punjab reported 192 deaths.

Twenty-eight deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 113 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 107 deaths. Fifty-one deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 19 deaths.

Seventy-two fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 71 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 37 deaths. Puducherry reported 34 deaths and 188 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
