COVID-19 cases nearing 15 lakh in India

  • 47,703 fresh cases of novel coronavirus recorded in last 24 hours
  • Total case count crosses 14.83 lakh
  • 654 deaths reported in last 24 hours
  • India’s death toll touches 33,425

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has informed that 47,703 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the country in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case count to 14.83 lakh.

Also, 654 fresh fatalities have been reported during this period. The addition of the deaths has taken the death toll to 33,425.

9.52 lakh patients have recovered

Out of the 14.83 lakh cases, over 4.96 lakh are active cases. Over 9.52 lakh COVID-19 patients have recovered from the infection and discharged. Notably, the figure also includes foreigners who have availed treatment in India.

227 COVID-19 deaths in Maharashtra

As far as deaths in the past 24 hours are concerned, Maharashtra alone has reported 227 deaths. It is followed by Tamil Nadu with 77 deaths and Karnataka with 75 deaths.

Andhra Pradesh has reported 49 deaths, whereas West Bengal has reported 39 deaths. Uttar Pradesh has reported 30 deaths. It is followed by Delhi with 26 deaths and Gujarat with 22 deaths.

Five states have over 1 lakh COVID-19 cases

There are five states that have already crossed the 1 lakh-mark as far as coronavirus cases are concerned. The first state to unfortunately cross the same was Maharashtra. Tamil Nadu and Delhi too have crossed this mark some time ago. Two states—Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh—on Monday crossed this mark after they reported over 5,000 cases each in the last 24 hours.

PM Modi praises Centre

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India is in a much better position than other countries in the fight against COVID-19. He asserted that it is the result of the government’s “right decisions taken at the right time”.

PM Modi said the country has been also able to expand its health infrastructure amid the coronavirus pandemic. He was speaking during the virtual inauguration of the COVID-19 testing facilities in Noida, Mumbai and Kolkata.

States again imposing lockdown

Due to the uninhibited surge in novel coronavirus cases in the past few weeks, several states have started imposing localised or statewide lockdown in a stringent manner—a step that should have been taken long back.

There is a scarcity of hospital beds in various states and the situation is such that authorities are forced to keep COVID-19 patients in home isolation.
