India’s single-day surge in COVID-19 cases dips below 1 lakh after 63 days


The health ministry on Tuesday informed that over 86,498 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.89 crore. It is the lowest single-day surge in cases in the past two months.

The ministry also informed that over 23.61 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 33.64 lakh people were vaccinated on Sunday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.51 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 2,123 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,51,309. Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.73 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.89 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 13.03 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 4.5 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.73 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 94.29 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 36.82 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 36.82 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 21.59 lakh samples was tested on June 2. Over 18.73 lakh samples were tested on June 7.

2,123 deaths in a day

Of the 2,123 deaths reported in a day, 340 deaths are from Maharashtra, 351 from Tamil Nadu and 340 from Karnataka. Eighty-six deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 97 deaths and West Bengal also reported 103 deaths. Gujarat reported 11 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 32 deaths. Delhi reported 36 deaths. Punjab reported 84 deaths.

Forty-one deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 31 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 43 deaths. Sixteen deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 16 deaths.

Thirty-seven fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 32 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported six deaths. Puducherry reported 10 deaths and 211 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
