The health ministry on Monday informed that over 3.52 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.73 crore. It is the highest single-day surge in cases across the world since the pandemic began last year.
The ministry also informed that over 14.19 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 9.95 lakh people were vaccinated on Sunday.
Notably, the second-highest daily surge of 3.49 lakh cases was reported on April 25. The third-highest single-day surge of over 3.46 lakh cases was reported on April 24. The fourth-highest surge of 3.32 lakh cases was recorded on April 23. The fifth-highest surge of over 3.14 lakh cases was recorded on April 22.
India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.
1.95 lakh deaths due to COVID-19
Also, 2,812 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,95,123. It is the highest number of deaths reported in a day since the pandemic began last year.
Previously, the death toll had crossed 2,700-mark on April 25.
1.43 crore patients recovered
Of the over 1.73 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 28.13 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 16.25 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.43 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.
Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 82.62 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March and April. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.
Over 27.93 crore samples tested
So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 27.93 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 17.40 lakh samples were tested on April 22. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.02 lakh samples was tested on April 25.
2,812 deaths in a day
Of the 2,812 deaths reported in a day, 832 deaths are from Maharashtra, 82 from Tamil Nadu and 143 from Karnataka. Sixty-nine deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 206 deaths and West Bengal reported 57 deaths. Gujarat reported 157 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 92 deaths. Delhi reported 350 deaths. Punjab reported 76 deaths.
Seven deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 74 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 68 deaths. Twenty-one deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 43 deaths.
Fourteen fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 44 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 103 deaths. Puducherry reported 11 deaths and 30 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
