For the first time, over 1 lakh COVID-19 cases reported in a day in India

In a major cause of concern, the health ministry on Monday informed that over 1.03 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.25 crore.

Notably, it is the first time since the pandemic began in March 2020 that the daily surge in COVID-19 cases in the country has crossed the 1 lakh mark.

The ministry also informed that over 7.91 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, 16.38 lakh people were vaccinated on Sunday.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.65 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 478 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,65,101.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

1.16 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.25 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 7.41 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 5.89 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.16 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 92.80 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March and April. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 24.90 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 24.90 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 8.93 lakh tests were carried out on April 4.

478 deaths in a day

Of the 478 deaths reported in a day, 222 deaths are from Maharashtra, 14 from Tamil Nadu and 15 from Karnataka. Five deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 31 deaths and West Bengal reported four deaths. Gujarat reported 14 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 11 deaths. Delhi reported 21 deaths. Punjab reported 51 deaths.

One death has been registered from Odisha. Rajasthan reported two deaths, whereas Bihar reported one death. Three deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported six deaths.

Two fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported two deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported eight deaths. Puducherry reported no death and 10 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
