The health ministry on Tuesday informed that over 1.96 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.69 crore. Notably, it is the first time since April 14 that daily surge in cases has dipped below 2 lakh.
The ministry also informed that over 19.85 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 24.30 lakh people were vaccinated on Monday.
India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.
3.07 lakh deaths due to COVID-19
Also, 3,511 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,07,231. Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.
Over 2.40 crore patients recovered
Of the over 2.69 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 25.86 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 9.60 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 2.40 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.
Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 89.26 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.
Over 33.25 crore samples tested
So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 33.25 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 21.23 lakh samples were tested on May 22. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 20.61 lakh samples was tested on May 20. Over 20.58 lakh samples were tested on May 24.
3,511 deaths in a day
Of the 3,511 deaths reported in a day, 592 deaths are from Maharashtra, 404 from Tamil Nadu and 529 from Karnataka. Ninety-six deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 153 deaths and West Bengal also reported 153 deaths. Gujarat reported 45 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 60 deaths. Delhi reported 207 deaths. Punjab reported 187 deaths.
Thirty-two deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 103 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 93 deaths. Forty-five deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 21 deaths.
Eighty-four fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 122 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 33 deaths. Puducherry reported 23 deaths and 196 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
