India’s daily surge in COVID-19 cases crosses 3.49 lakh, 2,767 deaths


The health ministry on Sunday informed that over 3.49 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.69 crore. It is the highest single-day surge in cases across the world since the pandemic began last year.

The ministry also informed that over 14.09 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 25.36 lakh people were vaccinated on Saturday.

Notably, the second-highest single-day surge of over 3.46 lakh cases was reported on April 24. The third-highest surge of 3.32 lakh cases was recorded on April 23. The fourth-highest surge of over 3.14 lakh cases was recorded on April 22, whereas the fifth-highest single-day surge of over 2.95 lakh COVID-19 cases was reported on April 21.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.92 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 2,767 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,92,311. It is the highest number of deaths reported in a day since the pandemic began last year.

Previously, the death toll had touched 2,642-mark on April 24.

1.40 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.69 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 26.82 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 15.82 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.40 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 83.05 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March and April. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 27.79 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 27.79 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 17.40 lakh samples were tested on April 22. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 17.19 lakh samples was tested on April 24.

2,767 deaths in a day

Of the 2,767 deaths reported in a day, 676 deaths are from Maharashtra, 80 from Tamil Nadu and 208 from Karnataka. Thirty-seven deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 222 deaths and West Bengal reported 59 deaths. Gujarat reported 152 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 104 deaths. Delhi reported 357 deaths. Punjab reported 92 deaths.

Eight deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 74 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 77 deaths. Fifteen deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 38 deaths.

Fourteen fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 81 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 110 deaths. Puducherry reported nine deaths and 25 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
