The health ministry on Wednesday informed that 13,823 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.05 crore.
The ministry also informed that 6.74 lakh healthcare workers have been vaccinated so far. Of it, over 2.20 lakh people were vaccinated on Tuesday.
So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.
Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.
1.52 lakh deaths due to COVID-19
Also, 162 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,52,718.
Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.
Similarly, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.
1.02 crore patients recovered
Of the over 1.05 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 1.97 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is less than 2 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.02 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.
Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 96.70 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.
Over 18.85 crore samples tested
So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 18.85 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 7.64 lakh tests were carried out on January 19.
162 deaths in a day
Of the 162 deaths reported in a day, 50 deaths are from Maharashtra, nine from Tamil Nadu and six from Karnataka. One death has been reported from Andhra Pradesh, whereas 11 deaths have been reported from West Bengal and four from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported two deaths and Delhi 10 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported seven deaths. Punjab has reported seven deaths.
One death each has been registered in Odisha and Bihar. Two deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Two deaths have been reported from Rajasthan. One death has been reported from Jammu and Kashmir.
No fatality has been reported from Assam whereas Uttarakhand recorded two deaths. No death has been reported from Puducherry. Three deaths have been reported from Jharkhand, whereas 26 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
