Valsad court discharges Jignesh Mevani in fake video tweet case

A court in Valsad discharged Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani in a fake video case on Twitter. The Vadgam MLA had on May 20 last year shared a video in which he had wrongly attributed a video of a teacher beating up a half-naked student as that of RMVM School in Valsad.

After the tweet, the school’s principal Bijal Patel lodged a police complaint against Jignesh Mevani stating that the video defamed the school and its teachers.

On Tuesday, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Manish Nimavat accepted Mevani’s discharge plea filed under section 239 of CrPC.

The court observed that no case was made out against Jignesh Mevani based on details and evidence placed on record.

The judge said there was no proof on record about the threat calls made to the principal or claims that parents gathered outside the school as a result of the video shared by Mevani.

The video was of a school in another country.

After sharing the video, Mevani had written that the teacher was from RMVM school and called it “Barbarism of worst form…”.

Eventually, it was revealed that the video was from another country. After realising the same, Mevani deleted the tweet and also apologised for the same. The police, however, began a probe against him.
