The Ministry of Health on Tuesday informed that the total number of coronavirus positive cases in the country has increased to 519 by 5.45 pm on Monday. The figure was 492 till 8.45 am and it is expected to rise rapidly as fresh cases of the deadly virus are being reported from across the country.

A major cause of concern for the Centre and the state governments is the fact that several cases of local transmissions are also being reported, which means that the virus has already entered the native population and is no longer confined to passengers coming from abroad.

As per the state-wise breakup provided by the Health Ministry, Kerala is the worst affected state with 95 confirmed cases of the virus. The southern state is followed by Maharashtra that has reported 89 cases of the virus so far. The state has also reported three deaths due to the virus, with the third death reported on Monday.

Karnataka has reported 37 cases so far followed by Telangana with 35 cases. Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have reported 33 cases each, whereas Rajasthan has reported 32 cases. Delhi has reported 31 cases, Punjab 29 cases, Haryana 28 cases, Tamil Nadu 15 cases, and Ladakh 13 cases. Meanwhile, the first case of the virus from the northeast has been reported from Manipur. All other states and union territories have reported confirmed coronavirus cases in single digit.

Notably, like Maharashtra, fresh cases of coronavirus are pouring in in the neighbouring state Gujarat, with several of them being cases of local transmissions—a major cause of concern for the state administration. This apart, Gujarat has also reported one death due to the virus after a 67-year-old woman succumbed to the virus in Surat.

Across India, 80 districts including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru are on a complete lockdown, which means only essential services will be allowed. Railways, metros and inter-state buses have been stopped and public transport has been banned in Punjab, Rajasthan, Bengal, and Haryana.

The sudden drop in public transport and movement of vehicles saw citizens facing problems this morning while stocking up on essential goods. Some medicine shops questioned how they could sell masks and sanitisers at cheaper, fixed rates if they could not buy them at lower rates.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry informed that 15.24 lakh passengers have been screened at the airports so far. India has already imposed a flying ban for international flights till March 31 as a temporary measure to contain the spread of the virus and domestic flight service will be also suspended from Wednesday.
