Congress releases sting operation video of Somabhai Patel

The political battle between the BJP and the Congress intensified on Sunday just before the bye-elections for eight Assembly in Gujarat.

Notably, Gujarat Congress on Sunday released a sting operation video of former Congress MP and MLA Somabhai Patel and a corporator from Gandhinagar to drive home its allegations of horse-trading by the BJP.

Notably, just before the Rajya Sabha polls in the state, Somabhai Patel had tendered his resignation from Limbdi seat, but BJP did not provide him with a ticket.

Congress on Sunday organised a press conference and released the video. Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief Amit Chavda alleged that the video reveals how BJP purchased the Congress turncoats.

The development comes on the last day of the poll campaign for the Assembly bypolls. The bypolls are taking place because several Congress MPs dumped the party and joined BJP, thereby further weakening the Congress.

Congress demands investigation

While releasing the video on social media, Amit Chavda demanded a probe against Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Gujarat BJP chief CR Patil and Union home minister Amit Shah. He said that the Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate should register a money laundering case in the matter and investigate the same.

Amit Chavda wrote that the video has exposed the nature and character of BJP. He alleged that Vijay Rupani, CR Patil and Amit Shah used the taxes paid by the public to buy MLAs, thus destroying democracy.

CR Patil reacts to the video

Gujarat BJP chief CR Patil has reacted to the video. Interacting with the media, CR Patil said that Congress has made fabricated allegations. He said that the video released by Congress does not show the face of Somabhai and Congress should place such a video. He also said that Somabhai did not mention him in the video.

Patil further said that Somabhai resigned in March this year, whereas he became the Gujarat BJP president in July.
