Congress’ Muslim candidates offer prayers in temple to woo voters

Shahbaz Shaikh, Ahmedabad: Voting for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation election is scheduled on February 21. Before the election, all political parties including the BJP and the Congress are trying their best to woo voters.

Meanwhile, in the Khadia ward of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Muslim candidates fielded by the Congress— Shahnawaz Shaikh and Razia Bano—worshiped in a temple on Thursday in a desperate bid to woo local voters.

The Congress has given tickets to Devarshi Shah, Shahnawaz Shaikh, Birju Thakkar and Razia Syed from Khadia ward. Congress candidates are meeting with voters living in the vicinity and have started their poll campaign.

Dispute redressal

Shahnawaz Shaikh who was given a ticket from the Jamalpur ward in the last election has been given a ticket from the Khadia ward in this election. The party had to face opposition, especially from NSUI workers, for not providing a ticket to Shahnawaz Shaikh from Jamalpur. More than 500 NSUI workers had resigned from their posts after besieging the Congress office.

In a bid to calm the dispute, the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee gave a ticket to Shaikh from Khadia.

There were reports that Shahnawaz Shaikh had refused to contest the polls from Khadia, but after the party high command’s assurance, he agreed to fight the election from Khadia.

In the previous civic elections held in 2015, Shaikh was elected to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation after winning from the Jamalpur ward, which is considered the safest for Muslims. But this time the party has fielded him from Khadia.
