A Congress MLA, Ramkesh Meena, wants to forget the 74th Independence Day celebrations which happened to be his own birthday as a nightmarish experience.
On the evening of the Independence Day, the Congress MLA from Gangapur in Sawai Madhopur district, had celebrated his birthday. His supporters and family members had ordered a large cake. But the cake had tricolour on it sans the Ashoka Chakra.
Unmindful, Ramkesh Meena cut the cake without caring to know that the cake was made with tricolour on the top. After cutting the cake, the MLA went to his supporters and fed the cake. The video of the birthday ceremony was posted on social media platforms and soon it became viral.
Former MLA asks police to take action
Man Singh Gurjar, a former MLA, took up the issue and accused Ramkesh Meena of dishonouring the national flag.
He urged the district administration to book Meena for dishonouring the national flag. He reported the matter to the police. The police is investigating the matter. But, Meena refused to offer any apology. His supporters insisted that the cake did not depict the national flag as there was no Chakra on it.
Past controversies over the use of tricolour
In the past too, controversies have erupted over celebrities disrespecting the tricolour. However, no action has been taken against them.
On March 10, 2010, while celebrating his birthday, Sachin Tendulkar cut a cake which was in the national flag design at Jamaica.
Similarly, on May 19, 2010, Sania Mirza was resting her feet on a guitar painted in the tricolour while posing as a model for an international company.
In Mandira Bedi’s case, she was wearing a sari with the national flag on its border, touching her feet.
However, no action was taken against them.
