Congress forms governing boards in 36 out of 50 local bodies in Rajasthan

The Rajasthan Congress after its drubbing at the hands of the BJP in the recent panchayat poll salvaged the situation with a better show in the civic poll. The Congress managed to form its governing boards in 36 out of the 50 local bodies. The BJP managed to have its chairman in 12 local bodies, while there were two Independents, who got elected as the chairman.

Advantage Congress

The ruling Rajasthan Congress, as against the BJP, got the support of a large number of Independents, who helped it to form boards in local bodies. In the Alwar district, out of the six local bodies, the BJP managed to form its boards in four, while Congress managed to form a board in two bodies.

Congress was successful in two local bodies in the Baran district. In Bharatpur that has eight local bodies, the Congress was successful in all the eight by getting its chairpersons elected. In the neighbouring Dholpur, which is the home district of the former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, the Congress was successful in having its boards in two local bodies, while in Dholpur proper, an Independent became the municipal chairman.

In Dausa, Congress managed to form its boards in all the three bodies. While in Sri Ganganagar where there are eight local bodies, the honours were equally shared by the Congress and the BJP.

Performance in Jaipur

In the biggest district of the  state, Jaipur, Congress  after 20 years was able to give an outstanding performance by  managing to form its boards in  nine out of the 10 local bodies and one was won by an Independent.

In Jodhpur which is the home district of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, the elections for the chairperson was held in two local bodies in which one was won by the BJP and the other by Congress. Similarly, in Kota’s two bodies and Sawai Madhopur, the honours were shared equally. While in Karauli all the three winners were of the Congress and in Abu Road in Sirohi, the BJP won.

In the elections for 50 local bodies of 12 districts, 14. 32 lakh voters cast their votes.
