The results of the elections for the six municipal corporations in Gujarat are out and BJP has emerged victorious in all the six municipal corporations. Congress has emerged as a distant second, with two other political parties—AAP and AIMIM—also delivering good results on expected lines.
BJP has won 482 seats out of a total of 575 seats in six corporations. While the Congress has won 55 seats, Aam Aadmi Party secured 27 seats, Bahujan Samaj Party won three seats, AIMIM won seven seats and an Independent candidate too won the election.
The election results also reveal that 1,340 candidates have lost their deposit in the civic elections. Of it, 178 are Congress candidates.
Congress’ humiliating defeat
The Congress party suffered a humiliating defeat due to the division of votes between the Aam Aadmi Party and AIMIM.
Among the six corporations, BJP got the highest 57.01 percent votes from Vadodara city. With this, BJP has won a total of 482 seats. On the other hand, the Congress, which has come a distant second with just 55 seats out of 576, has lost its base in many cities. Congress’ vote share has declined from 41.57 percent in 2015 to 26.86 percent in 2021.
150 AAP candidates lose deposit in AMC election
As far as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is concerned, 16 candidates of BJP lost their deposits in wards such as Gomtipur, Danilimada and Jamalpur. Also, 65 Congress candidates lost their deposit.
The most shocking thing is that nearly 150 candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party, despite a massive poll campaign, lost their deposits. Interestingly, AAP gave a stellar performance in Surat Municipal Corporation where it won 27 seats and decimated the Congress to a big zero. BJP won 93 seats in Surat and retained its power in the civic body.
