In a major cause of concern for the Gujarat government as well as residents, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state has increased to 35. Six fresh cases of the virus have been reported in the past 24 hours.
The development comes even as the authorities are taking desperate measures, including the lockdown of the state to contain the spread of the deadly virus. Among the fresh cases, one has a travel history of Dubai, whereas the remaining are local transmissions.
Notably, local transmission of the virus is a major cause of concern for the authorities as it becomes difficult for the authorities to track down people who came in contact with the infected person and mass screening of people is yet not an option for India.
According to the state health department, there are 13 positive cases in Ahmedabad, six positive cases each in Vadodara, Surat, and Gandhinagar, three positive cases in Rajkot and one positive case in Kutch. Notably, a 67-year-old woman in Surat has already succumbed to coronavirus in the state.
Health secretary Jayanti Ravi said there are 609 ventilators available in government hospitals and around 1,500 ventilators available in private hospitals. She also said there are 1,583 isolation beds available in the state.
She further said there is no shortage of essential medicines in the state and regular monitoring of all developments related to the coronavirus scare is being done at the highest level.
The bureaucrat revealed that 45,000 ‘N-95’ masks are available with the state government along with 6 lakh triple-layered masks.
