- Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed the Mangala arti at Jagannath temple at dawn
Ahmedabad: The 145th Jagannath Rathyatra in Ahmedabad was flaggged off on Friday morning from the Jagannath temple in Jamalpur.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel performed the ‘Pahind vidhi’ (symbolic cleaning of the rathyatra route) before the chariots rolled out. The ceremony is traditionally performed by the CM, but Patel’s positive Covid test meant he would not be able to participate. However, the negative test results cleared him for the ritual.
Earlier, at dawn, Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed the Mangala arti at the temple. State Home minister Harsh Sanghavi was present with him.
This year’s rathyatra comes after a two-year gap due to Covid-19 pandemic.
The enthusiasm among the crowd was palpable, with people gathering in large numbers at the temple as well as along the route.
Sanghavi said that the entire route had been covered with CCTVs. This year, drones, body cameras and helicopters, too, have been pressed into use by the police, he added.
