A cloudburst was reported from Devprayag in Uttarakhand damaging which damaged several buildings mainly shops in the area. No casualties have been reported so far. The cloudburst was reported at around 5 pm. Since it was reported in an area that had more commercial buildings which were closed due to lockdown, casualties if any are expected to be low. Officials are monitoring the rising flood-like situation.
In February this year, a glacial burst near Joshimath triggering an avalanche and flooding along the Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. The gushing water damaged houses along the river bank and the Rishiganga power project, with 200 deaths reported due to the incident. Thousands of people were evacuated from the area.
Five National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams—one from Dehradun and four from Delhi, as well as two from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), were deployed for search-and-rescue operations. Around 200 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel have also been deployed.
Another glacier break killed eight people near the Indo-China border in Uttarakhand in April. The second incident happened due to heavy snowfall in the region. The burst took place in Sumna village.
