The local body elections or civic body polls in Gujarat have been announced and will be held in two phases. In the first phase of the civic body elections on February 21, polls will be held for municipal corporations. The results for the same will be declared on February 23. The last date for filling candidature is February 6 while the last date for withdrawal of nomination in the civic body polls is February 8.
The second phase of civic body polls will be held on February 28 and will cover nagarpalikas, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats. The results of the same will be declared on March 2. The last date for filling candidature is February 13 while the last date for withdrawal is February 15. The notification for the elections will be put out on February 1.
With the announcement, the model code of conduct has also come into effect in the state.
Elections to six municipal corporations, including Ahmedabad, 55 municipalities, 31 district panchayats, and 231 taluka panchayats were supposed to be held in November 2019. The polls were to be held a month before their five-year terms came to end, but were postponed by three months given the COVID-19 pandemic.
