Civic body polls: BJP announces candidate names for Jamnagar, Bhavnagar municipal corporation seats


The BJP on Thursday announced the candidates for all the 64 seats in the 16 wards of the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation. Later it also announced the names of candidates for the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation elections. It has announced names for 52 seats in 13 wards of the city. For both the corporations, it has announced four names for each of the wards.

Earlier in the day, the BJP has announced the name of its list of candidates for the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) civic body polls. This was the first list to be released by the Saffron Party for the civic body polls. It announced names for 18 wards of the RMC. It has in all announced names of candidates for 72 seats (four names each for every ward).

The names are being announced after the BJP concluded its Parliamentary Board meeting. Party’s Gujarat president CR Patil earlier in a press conference said that the party had finalized the names of candidates and would announce it by Thursday evening.

BJP’s strategy for civic body polls

The party had earlier brought in some restrictions on who all will be allowed to contest the civic body polls. BJP has decided not to to give tickets to those who are over 60 years of age, are relatives of BJP leaders, and have had three terms.

The party had said that the list of candidates for Jamnagar, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar municipal corporations will be released first. The names of candidates for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will be released by late evening.

The local body elections or civic body polls in Gujarat will be held in two phases. In the first phase of the civic body elections on February 21, polls will be held for municipal corporations. The results for the same will be declared on February 23.
