Chandigarh: Charanjit Singh Channi, three-time Congress MLA from Chamkaur Sahib, took oath as the 16th chief minister of Punjab on Monday. He was administered the oath of office by Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
Along with Charanjit Singh Channi, Congress leaders Sukhjinder Randhawa and OP Soni, too, took oath as ministers at the event.
The new CM was to later address the media at 12.30 pm.
Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi arrived at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
Following the swearing-in, PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “Congratulations to Shri Charanjit Singh Channi Ji on being sworn-in as Punjab’s Chief Minister. Will continue to work with the Punjab government for the betterment of the people of Punjab.”
BSP supremo Mayawati lashed out at Congress, calling Dalit MLA Channi’s elevation as CM as a political gimmick ahead of elections.
Ahead of the ceremony
Former CM Captain Amarinder Singh had resigned from his post on Saturday after a talk with party chief Sonia Gandhi. The move followed several clashes and differences within the party.
While the names of Sunil Jakhar and Navjyot Singh Sidhu had been doing rounds earlier, Charanjit Singh Channi was chosen as the next CM of the state.
While announcing his name, AICC’s Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat had said that the party would fight next year’s elections under Sidhu’s leadership. Reacting to this on Monday morning, Jakhar had said that the statement was baffling and said that it undermined the authority of the CM.
