CBSE likely to hold class 12 exams amid COVID-19 pandemic

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 12 board exams are not likely to be cancelled despite a section of the students demanding the same owing to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like 2020, it is likely to be held in July in compliance with COVID safety protocols.

Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal will announce further details regarding the format and exam dates on June 1. The discussion regarding holding the class 12 exam took place in a high-level meeting between the Centre and states, according to media reports.

Pokhriyal tweeted, “I want to reiterate that both students’ and teachers’ safety, security, and future are supremely important to us.”

What was discussed in the meeting

According to news reports, the officials present at the meeting discussed holding exams for 19 major subjects, with many states supporting the board. For other subjects, a different mode of evaluation such as internal assessment might be used. The officials also discussed holding 90-minute exams for major subjects as against the usual 3-hour-long exams.

The high-level meeting conducted on Sunday was chaired by defence minister Rajnath Singh. In attendance were Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, minister of women and child Smriti Zubin Irani and information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar. Also present were the education ministers of all states, and the education secretaries and chairpersons of the state examination boards.

Class 10 exam cancelled

In an unprecedented move, the CBSE had last months cancelled the class 10 board exams owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several politicians and state governments too had demanded the cancellation of exams saying that holding the exams amid the pandemic would put the lives of students at risk.

While the exams for class 10 have been cancelled, students will be promoted based on internal assessment.
