CBSE class 12 board exams cancelled, declares Centre

In a major development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the cancellation of the CBSE class 12 board exams. The decision was taken during a review meeting chaired by the PM in which officials briefed him about the views received from various stakeholders, including state governments.

PM Modi said that the decision has been taken in the “interest of students” and to safeguard their health amid the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic that has wreaked havoc in India.  It was also decided that like last year, in case some students desire to take the exams, such an option would be provided to them by CBSE, as and when the situation becomes conducive.

Health and safety of students important

The prime minister took to Twitter in this regard. He said, “Government of India has decided to cancel the Class XII CBSE Board Exams. After extensive consultations, we have taken a decision that is student-friendly, one that safeguards the health as well as future of our youth.”

During the meeting, PM Modi said that the health and safety of students is of utmost importance and there will be no compromise on this aspect. He also said that it was high time that the anxiety among students, parents and teachers is put to an end. The prime minister was also of the view that students should not be forced to appear in the exams in a stressful situation.

Many states opposed board exams

The government had been long contemplating how to hold the class 12 exams amid the pandemic, raising anxiety among students and teachers. Many students had demanded the cancellation of the exams and petitions have been filed in the court regarding the same.

In fact, several state governments too had opposed the conduct of exams amid the COVID-19 pandemic citing risk to the health and safety of students.

Class 10 exams were cancelled

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had cancelled the class 10 board exams in April owing to the aggravating COVID-19 situation in the country. The board later formulated a process through which the performance of class 10 students could be assessed for promotion.

The board is likely to adopt the same for class 12 students as well. The PMO said the CBSE will announce results for class 12 students “as per a well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner.”
