CBDT appoints Amit Jain as I-T chief of Gujarat

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Friday appointed Amit Jain as the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Gujarat. Jain will replace Pritam Singh who has been appointed as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Uttar Pradesh (East).

Interestingly, Amit Jain was Director General of Income Tax of Gujarat till June when he was posted as the chief of the Income Tax department in Mumbai. It was a transfer that surprised many in the I-T department.

At that time, 1985-batch IRS officer Pritam Singh was appointed as the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax of Gujarat. Singh had replaced Ajai Das Mehrotra, who was appointed as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for Uttar Pradesh (West) and Uttarakhand. Notably, Singh got promoted to the rank of Principal Chief Commissioner in January 2020.

As far as Amit Jain is concerned, he got his past two promotions in Gujarat only. In fact, he got the promotions in the investigation wing of the I-T department. He was empaneled as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax of Gujarat on January 31.

Initially, Jain was posted in Gujarat as Director of Investigations. He was then promoted to Principal Director and then to Director General of Income Tax.

Earlier, Amit Jain’s transfer to Mumbai came as a surprise for many in the I-T department. They were then expecting his posting as Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Gujarat.
