Scientists in China have found coronavirus in the semen of infected men, global media reported on Friday. The reports also said that further research will be needed to know whether the disease can be sexually transmitted.
The findings from the study done at a hospital in China were published in the JAMA Network Open medical journal. So far the medical community has maintained that Covid19 is spread through respiratory droplets or contact. The virus is also found present in feces, saliva and urine.
The research, which tested the semen of 38 coronavirus patients, was carried out at the Shangqiu Municipal Hospital in China’s Henan Province. The study wanted to determine whether the virus is present in semen as well. The patients were in the 15 to 50 age group.
The journal stated that genetic material from the coronavirus was found in the semen of six patients. Four of these were in the “acute stage of infection” and two were “recovering” from the disease.
The researchers however said that further studies would be required to determine whether the virus can be sexually transmitted since this study had a small sample size.
