Srinagar: At least eight persons were killed in a road accident on Thatri-Doda road in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday morning. Around a dozen others were injured in the mishap.
According to available details, the driver of a minibus which was on its way to Doda from Thatri lost control of the vehicle at Sui Gwari. The bus fell into a deep gorge along the Chenab river.
Officials sources pegged the death toll at eight and the number of injured at 10-12.
Rescue operations were underway around noon on Thursday.
PM announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to deceased’s kin
Following the mishap, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured.
“Saddened by the road accident near Thatri, Doda in Jammu and Kashmir. In this hour of grief, I convey my condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the people who have been injured recover at the earliest,” PM Modi tweeted.
Lieutenant General of J&K Manoj Sinha tweeted, “Deeply anguished to hear about the tragic road accident in Doda. My thoughts and prayers for the families who have lost their loved ones. Have directed the District administration to provide immediate relief to families of deceased and best medical assistance to the injured.”
