New Delhi: A three-storeyed building in north Delhi collapsed on Monday morning. Several people were trapped under the debris. Two children who were rescued from the rubble were rushed to the hospital, but they were declared dead shortly thereafter, according to reports.
The incident took place just before noon at Sabzi Mandi area of Malka Ganj in north Delhi. The police and fire and emergency services rushed to the spot on getting information about the mishap. The building that collapsed is said to be a very old structure.
Seven fire tenders were deployed at the site for rescue operations and removing the debris.
The station house officer (SHO) and other police personnel had reached the spot and were assisting in the operations.
Delhi witnessed heavy rains over past few days. According to sources, the already old building may have been further weakened by the incessant rains, leading to the collapse.
Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi, saying, “The incident of building collapse in Sabzi Mandi area is extremely unfortunate. The administration is busy in relief and rescue operations. I am monitoring the situation.”
