Kolktata: Former West Bengal Chief Minister and veteran Bengali singer Sandhya Mukherjee have refused the Padma awards conferred on them

The Ministry of Home Affairs had released the list of Padma awardees on Tuesday.

While rejecting the award shortly after the announcement, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee claimed nobody had informed him and that if he had been conferred the Padma Bhushan, he rejected it.

However, a Home Ministry official has said that his wife had been informed of the award earlier.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, a veteran from Communist Party of India (Marxist) served as the CM of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011. Of late, he has largely avoided public appearances.

Sandhya Mukherjee, a renowned Bengali singer, declined the award after being contacted by government officials. Her daughter Soumi Sengupta reportedly told the official that it was demeaning for a singer of her stature to be awarded Padma Shri at the age of 90 with a career spanning over eight decades. The Padma Shri was more befitting for a junior artiste, not ‘Gitasree’ Sandhya Mukherjee, she said.
