The brother of Gujarat BJP President CR Paatil has tested positive for COVID-19.
Several leaders of both BJP and Congress in the state have tested positive since the pandemic began.
Sources said Prakash Paatil is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. His driver has also tested positive for the disease.
Prakash Paatil’s family has been put under quarantine.
Earlier Surat BJP chief Nitin Bhajiyawala and his wife Jayshree also tested positive for the disease.
They are also under treatment at a private hospital in the city.
Two days ago, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also tested positive for the disease. He had tweeted about his condition and said that he was under treatment at a private hospital.
CR Paatil’s maiden Surat rally was cancelled
The Surat BJP had earlier organised a huge rally to welcome CR Paatil to the city after he took over as the BJP president.
Paatil cancelled the rally on reaching Surat after he saw the crowd. The welcome ceremony alone had hundreds of BJP supporters and COVID-19 norms going for a toss.
The party came under severe criticism as Surat was recording the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the state.
Paatil had at that time told the media that it was natural for people to be enthusiastic about his maiden visit to Surat.
He said he had been assured by local leaders that social distancing would be maintained at the welcome rally.
“I learnt that long queues were being formed along the route of the rally and it will have over 2000 workers. I did not want to take any chance during the COVID-19 pandemic and asked the organisers to cancel it,” Paatil told the media at that time.
