UK residents can now resume work from office, ditch masks in public, says PM Boris Johnson

London: Covid-related restrictions in the United Kingdom will be lifted next week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced, citing national peak of cases.

The guideline for work from home has been lifted with immediate effect. Wearing a mask or carrying a Covid pass for entry at specific places will not be required from next week.

The curbs had been reimposed last month amid rising cases and expectation of a “tidal wave” of Omicron cases.

According to Johnson, the country’s scientists had said that Omicron cases had peaked nationally, allowing for relaxation of the restrictions.

However, he did caution that “the pandemic is not over”.

Boris Johnson credited the country’s “extraordinary booster campaign” for the lifting of the restrictions.

He shared that more than 36 million booster doses of vaccine had already been administered, covering 90 per cent of the population aged above 60.

The UK Prime Minister was criticised heavily for holding parties at Downing Street despite Covid lockdown.
