Boats sink off Gir-Somnath coast, at least 8 fishermen missing: Reports

Veraval: The Indian Coast Guard received information of sunk fishing boats off Gujarat coast on Thursday due to bad weather.

According to local fishermen, at least five fishermen swam to safety. However, there is no trace of 8-10 other fishermen, they said.

The Defence PRO of Gujarat said in a tweet on Thursday that the Coast Guard had received information of the boats having sunk “at Navadra, Una Harbour mouth due to bad weather”.

IBs and helicopter were pressed into action immediately and sent for search and rescue.

Other assets of the Indian Coast Guard, too, have been mobilized, as per the tweet.

The boats involved are Gauri Nandan, Dhanvantari, Shiva Priya, Hari Prasad and Al Faizan.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of squally weather along and off South Gujarat coast . High wave alert has also been issued for the period between Wednesday morning and Friday night along the coast of Gujarat from Diu to Okha and from Mandvi to Jakhau.
