Vice-president of BJP’s Vadodara unit, Mahesh Sharma, died of COVID-19 in Gujarat on Sunday. He passed away at a private hospital where he was under treatment after testing positive for COVID-19 last week.
Sharma was with the BJP for over two decades and was also associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Several senior party leaders expressed their condolence at the passing away of Sharma, who is survived by his wife, daughter, son and daughter-in-law. Sharma’s family has also tested positive and is in quarantine.
Congress MLA from Petlad Niranjan Patel (76) has also tested positive for the disease as well as former MLA from Karjan Assembly Constituency in Vadodara district Akshay Patel.
Patel who represented the seat from Congress recently joined BJP after resigning from the party ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls.
Gujarat on Sunday reported 965 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases reported by the state.
The addition of the fresh cases has taken the state’s total tally to 48,441.
Twenty deaths were reported in the state during this period that has taken Gujarat’s COVID-19 related death toll to 2,147. While six deaths were reported from Ahmedabad, nine were from Surat. Two deaths have been reported from Dahod. The districts of Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, and Jamnagar have reported one death each.
