The election expenses given by BJP’s Morbi candidate Brajesh Merja shows his election campaign expense as zero for the period from October 16 to 23.
Gujarat is set for bypolls on November 3 and Morbi is one of the seats that will see elections. Brajesh Merja is a former MLA from the seat.
He had resigned ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls and later joined the BJP which propped him as their candidate for the bypolls.
All candidates have to give details of their day to day election expenses. Recently the Election Commission had issued a show-cause to two candidates for failing to file details of their election expenses.
In his election campaign expense details submitted to the Election Commission, Brajesh Merja has submitted that he incurred no expense from October 16 to 23 for the polls.
This raises the question if Merja went alone to file his nomination form or that he incurred no expenses for the door to door campaign he has been undertaking or whether he desisted from any sort of campaigning in Morbi during the period.
The Election Commission has mandated that all candidates will have to put forth their election campaign expenses to ensure that all candidates have a level playing field and no one candidate rides on money power.
Usually, the election officials have the power to summon the candidates and seek clarification about expenses that have not been mentioned. If the candidates admit to the expenses, the same is added to his total election expenditure.
If the candidates fail to respond within 48 hours the officials can take action against them.
