Despite the rising cases of coronavirus, the West Bengal BJP on Thursday tried to carry out major rallies from Kolkata and Howrah to state secretariat Nabanna. After the BJP workers did not abide by the warnings of the police, the police personnel resorted to lathi-charge and had to use tear gas and water cannons at the crowd in Howrah’s Santragachi.
The BJP claimed that several of its workers got injured because of the action of the police. Sources said BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato and Bengal BJP’s vice-president Raju Banerjee also got injured in the incident. BJP’s ‘Nabanna Chalo’ programme
The law enforcers also resorted to lathi-charge in the Hastings area in Kolkata. Four major rallies, two each from Kolkata and Howrah, will move towards Nabanna in Shibpur in Howrah district, BJP sources said.

The ruling Trinamool Congress government in the state on Wednesday denied permission to the programme citing the Pandemic Act. The government had said that democratic rallies within “permissible parameters” of only 100 participants will be allowed.
The state government has also announced that Nabanna will be closed for two days from October 8 for “sanitisation”.
BJP’s ‘Nabanna Chalo’ programme
In a bid to protest against the alleged killing of its workers, BJP has planned to carry out rallies to Nabanna.
Thousands of BJP workers from Kolkata and Howrah began marching towards Nabanna to protest the “worsening” law and order in the state, on Thursday afternoon. The West Bengal Police, however, blocked the march and police personnel resorted to lathi-charge, used tear gas and water cannons on BJP workers at Santragachi in Howrah district.
Chaotic scenes were witnessed as BJP workers retaliated by hurling stones at cops. Following West Bengal Police’s crackdown, BJP workers also set ablaze tires in Howrah during the party’s state-wide agitation.
“The police is lathi charging our people…stone-pelting being done from Khidirpur side. Can’t the police see that?” BJP leader Locket Chatterjee said.
What did Kailash Vijayvargiya say?
On BJP’s holding a big march even as the state is battling coronavirus pandemic, BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya said, “All workers are wearing masks. Are rules only for us? Mamata ji holds demonstrations with thousands and we’re being taught lessons of social distancing. Do the same rules not apply to her?”
What did JP Nadda say? BJP’s ‘Nabanna Chalo’ programme
BJP national president JP Nadda criticised the Mamata Banerjee government for the police’s action against BJP workers. In a series of tweets, the BJP president lambasted the Mamata government and said that BJP will throw her out of power.
Nadda said: “Mamata Banerjee’s karyakartas and the Gov machinery led by her have unleashed brute force upon BJP karyakartas in an attempt to prevent them from holding protests against her tyrannical & bloodied misrule in West Bengal. Such misuse of power is totally unacceptable & condemnable.”
“Beating up peaceful protestors, the hurling country-made bombs and using water cannon on their protest march show Mamata Banerjee’s frustration because she knows that her days in power are numbered and the people of Bengal have made up their mind to throw out her tyrannical govt.”
“The only thing Mamata Banerjee’s government has done better than the previous Left regimes is increasing brutality and political violence against political opponents. Bengal has been burning under her administration, which patronises violent elements.”
“I want to clearly tell her again that BJP karyakartas have resolved to fight her corrupt, violent and dictatorial rule democratically to restore Bengal’s lost glory and pride. The people of Bengal and BJP will defeat her regime lock, stock and barrel. #NabannoCholo”
“BJP’s struggle to save the rich glory of Bengal will continue. We stand with the people of Bengal despite the brazen misuse of state power by Mamata didi. Our brave @BJYM karyakartas compelled her to close the Secretariat. This is an admission that she has lost public confidence.”
