New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday announced the names of Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and L Murugan as its candidates for Rajya Sabha by-elections in Assam and Madhya Pradesh respectively. They will fight for two seats that fell vacant this year.
The elections are scheduled to be held on October 4.
Sonowal and Murugan had been named as minsters in the recent rejig of the Union government.
Sonowal is the Cabinet minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Murugan is the Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy and Information and Broadcasting.
To continue holding the posts, they need to win an election within six months.
Hence, it was decided to field them as BJP’s Rajya Sabha candidates.
While Sonowal will fight for the seat vacated by Biswajit Daimary after the latter was to becoem the Assembly Speaker, L Murugan will contest for the seat left vacant after Thawarchand Gehlot was appointed as Karnataka Governor.
