BJP RS MP Abhay Bhardwaj critical, expert team rushed to Rajkot

The condition of BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat Abhay Bhardwaj is extremely critical. Bhardwaj had tested positive for COVID-19 and was under treatment at the Civil Hospital in Rajkot.

On Tuesday he was put on a ventilator after his oxygen level dropped further. A special team of doctors was also sent to Rajkot to oversee Abhay Bhardwaj’s condition. He has been put under ECMO treatment.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) therapy refers to where outside support is provided to a person’s heart and lungs to function after they are unable to do so on their own.

The special team consists of three experts from Ahmedabad and one from Surat. Media reports quoted Dr Anil Patel as saying that Abhay Bhardwaj is unable to maintain the oxygen level in his body on his own.

“He has been in this condition for three weeks now. Usually, a patient recovers within two weeks but as of now his condition is critical,” said Dr Patel.

Experts sent on a special chartered flight for Abhay Bhardwaj

A team consisting of Dr Anand Shukla, Dr Amit Patel and Dr Tushar Patel was sent to Rajkot immediately on a chartered flight by chief minister Vijay Rupani to help with Bhardwaj’s treatment.

The doctors were accompanied by education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama. Chudsamsa said that apart from the team of three doctors from Ahmedabad, the guidance of experts from AIIMS is also being taken. He said the services of Dr Samir Gami, another expert from Surat, is also being sought.

Both Abhay Bhardwaj and his son had tested positive for COVID-19 and is under treatment at the Rajkot Civil Hospital.

BJP MLA from Jamnagar Rural, Raghavji Patel, who had also tested positive and was under treatment has now been shifted to Ahmedabad for further treatment.

BJP Gujarat President CR Patil who was under treatment for COVID-19 tested negative and was discharged from hospital while party spokesperson Bharat Pandya was also discharged from the UN Mehta Hospital where he was being treated for COVID-19.
