- Priyanka Tibrewal had joined BJP in August 2014
Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday announced lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal as its candidate for the Bhabanipur by-elections on September 30. She will be pitted against West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
The decision to field her was taken by the central election committee of BJP and was officially announced on Friday.
The party also named Sujit Das and Milan Ghosh as its candidates for the by-elections in Jangipur and Samserganj respectively.
Priyanka Tibrewal (40) has a degree in law from University of Kolkata and an MBA from Assumption University of Thailand. She worked as legal counsel for BJP leader Babul Supriyo. She later joined BJP in August 2014.
The next year, she contested the municipal elections in Kolkata, but lost.
She was made the vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).
The Bhabanipur elections are extremely crucial for Mamata Banerjee for whom retaining the position of the chief minister depends on her win on this seat.
In the West Bengal Assembly elections held earlier this year, the TMC won with a sweeping majority, but Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram, from where she had decided to contest the elections this time.
