Kolkata: BJP’s sitting MP from Asansol in West Bengal Babul Supriyo joined Trinamool Congress on Saturday. He quit BJP just months after being dropped as a Union Minister.

He joined the party in present of All-India Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien.

“Today, in the presence of National General Secretary @abhishekaitc and RS MP @derekobrienmp, former Union Minister and sitting MP @SuPriyoBabul joined the Trinamool family. We take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to him!” read a tweet from the party’s official Twitter handle.

Babul Supriyo joined BJP in 2014. He won elections twice from Asansol

The news shortly after Babul Supriyo announced he was leaving politics and would also resign as a Member of Parliament. At that time, he had claimed he had not been approached by either Congress or TMC and would not be joining any political party.

His joining Trinamool Congress comes as a big surprise. In fact, Babul Supriyo’s name was on the list of BJP’s star campaigners in the upcoming West Bengal by-elections where all eyes will be on the Bhabanipur seat that will witness a fight between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal.
