Despite the Gupkar alliance winning 112 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir DDC election, the BJP on Wednesday said that the results indicate that the Gupkar alliance has lost its credibility. The BJP’s claim is based on the number of votes that the saffron party and independent candidates have secured in the poll.
BJP leader and Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday said that following the declaration of poll results, BJP has emerged as the single-largest party followed by NC, PDP and Congress. While BJP won 75 seats (till the last count), NC won 67 seats, PDP won 27 seats and Congress won 26 seats. While the BJP has swept Jammu, the alliance has won Kashmir.
The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration—a grouping of mainstream J&K-based parties including rivals National Conference (NC) of Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP)—has won 112 seats. Voting was held in 280 seats—14 in each of the 20 districts of the union territory. Results have been declared for all but two seats.
BJP won 4.87 lakh votes
Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The Gupkar alliance formed just because they were not been able to fight BJP single-handedly. Despite that, BJP got 4.87 lakh votes, NC got 2.82 lakh votes, PDP got 57,000 votes and Congress secured 1.39 lakh votes. BJP has got more than the combined vote share of NC, PDP and Congress. This is the first time BJP has got seats in the Kashmir Valley.”
“The voter turnout in Kashmir, especially in places known as ‘hotbeds of terror’, has been much higher than in previous elections, before the scrapping of Article 370,” he added.
People have shown trust in PM Modi
Anurag Thakur, BJP’s in-charge of DDC polls in Jammu and Kashmir said, “It is important to know that independent candidates have polled more votes than the Congress and the PDP. The same Mehbooba Mufti who had refused to unfurl the tricolour has got a befitting reply today.”
“The trust which the people of J&K have put in Modi ji, the support which they’ve shown to his policies and to his work to strengthen the democratic principles are the reasons why BJP has got 3 seats in the Kashmir Valley as well,” Thakur said.
He further added, “The combined vote share of the Independent candidates and the BJP amounts to a little over 52%. This is a clear indication that the Gupkar gang has lost its credibility and the trust of the people.”
