The BJP recorded a thumping victory in the civic body elections in Gujarat decimating the Congress to its lowest tally. The saffron party went on to win all the six municipal corporations for which elections were held on February 21 and retained power in all of them.
Now, the victory of the BJP candidate from ward 8 of Vadodara Municipal Corporation has been challenged before court, with the petitioner demanding that the victory of the BJP candidate should be nullified by the court. The petition filed in the court of the Principal Civil Judge in Vadodara has been admitted by the court.
Petition against BJP’s Keyur Rokadia
BJP candidate from Ward No. 8, Keyur Rokadia, won the election. Independent candidate Swejal Vyas, who also contested the polls from the same ward, has filed a petition in the court against Rokadia.
Vyas has demanded the nullification of Keyur’s victory and demanded action against the returning officer.
Contentions raised against Rokadia
Petitioner Swejal Vyas has alleged that Rokadia’s resignation from the Fee Regulation Committee was against the rules prescribed in the Act notified by the Gujarat government. The petitioner has alleged that Keyur Rokadia resigned from the regulatory committee before contesting the election. But his resignation was not accepted.
As per rules, the candidate contesting elections should not be working in any post. It has also been alleged in the petition that during the form verification on February 8, the matter was objected to. But the returning officer did not pay attention to this.
It has also been alleged in the petition that Vyas had complained to the Returning Officer. But the election officer did not take any action. So, legal action should be taken against him as well. The petitioner
Vyas has demanded the nullification of Rokadia’s election. After the matter came to light, Keyur Rokadia has dismissed the allegations against him as baseless.
