A councillor in the city was allegedly beaten by residents of her own society after a confrontation over a Jain temple.
Bhavnaben, the Nava Vadaj councillor, was allegedly beaten three days ago.
She was slapped, her spectacles broken and the attackers also threatened to kill her husband.
Bhvnaben Vaghela, 54, is a BJP’s councillor from the area.
She lives at Satapadi society near Nirnaynagar.
Last Tuesday, six women approached the BJP councillor at her home to make a representation of a Jain temple.
The woman came to her house as her husband, Hasmukh Vaghela was the society chairman.
He was allegedly the one constructing an additional floor of the temple.
Since her husband was not at home, she asked the women to come later.
But soon an argument ensued and three women began hassling her.
Her spectacles were broken in the mele and her face was scratched,
Her daughter Khushboo came to her rescue.
She also informed the police following which the women left.
They threatened to kill her husband.
A complaint registered with Vadaj police station names Dharmishta Patel, Yash Solanki and Krishna Solanki as the attackers.
A controversy had erupted in the society over the construction of a Jain temple.
The temple trustees had recently begun construction of a third floor of the temple.
The society residents were opposing it.
Vadaj police have asked the women to register their statements.
BJP Councillor shot at in Surat
Earlier, three weeks ago a councillor in Surat was shot at by some unidentified men on a bike.
The bullet hit councillor Bharat Vaghasiya behind his right shoulder. He was rushed to the hospital where his condition was reported to be stable.
Vaghasiya, BJP councillor from Karanj-Maghob ward in Surat was on his way home from the office at Dahya Park Society on his moped.
Two men on a bike approached him and the pillion rider fired one round from his pistol.
