CDS Bipin Rawat and wife, 11 others killed in Tamil Nadu chopper crash

  • IAF confirms death of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and 12 others in the accident in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday

New Delhi: Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others were killed in the helicopter crash that happened in Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The deaths were confirmed by the Indian Air Force on Twitter in the evening.

The IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, carrying Rawat, his wife, Defence Assistant, security commandos and IAF pilots, crashed somewhere between Coimbatore and Sulur.

Rawat was on his way to Wellington Staff College for a lecture.

There were 14 passengers in total. The only survivor, Group Captain Varun Singh, is under treatment at Military Hospital in Wellington.

CDS Bipin Rawat had been in service for 43 years.

Throughout the day, social media was abuzz with prayers for the well-being of the passengers. However, by evening, the messages turned into condolences.

PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “Gen Bipin Rawat was an outstanding soldier. A true patriot, he greatly contributed to modernising our armed forces and security apparatus. His insights and perspectives on strategic matters were exceptional. His passing away has saddened me deeply. Om Shanti.”

Home minister Amit Shah tweeted, “A very sad day for the nation as we have lost our CDS, General Bipin Rawat Ji in a very tragic accident. He was one of the bravest soldiers, who has served the motherland with utmost devotion. His exemplary contributions & commitment cannot be put into words. I am deeply pained.”

“Deeply anguished by the sudden demise of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other Armed Forces personnel in an extremely unfortunate helicopter accident today in Tamil Nadu. His untimely death is an irreparable loss to our Armed Forces and the country,” tweeted Defence minister Rajnath Singh
