IAF helicopter with CDS Bipin Rawat, wife on board crashes in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter with senior Defence officials on board crashed in Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. According to official sources, four bodies have been recovered while three have been recovered from the accident site.

Among those on board the chopper was Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat.

The chopper crashed somewhere between Coimbatore and Sulur.

According to reports, Rawat was on his way to Wellington Staff College for a lecture.

Sources were quoted by news agency ANI as saying that those on board the helicopter included Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, Defence Assistant, security commandos and IAF pilots.

Sources have said that locals had taken two bodies with 80 per cent burns to a local hospital, while a few bodies could be seen downhill of the area.

Efforts are on to retrieve the bodies and ascertain their identities.

An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

As news spread, prayers began to pour in on social media for the well-being of the helicopter passengers.
