War of words between Bijal Patel, Kamla Chavda ahead of AMC poll

Ahead of the civic body elections in Gujarat, former Ahmedabad mayor and BJP leader Bijal Patel has taken a dig at the Congress saying that the latter is interested only in controversy and not development.

Bijal Patel said, “As a representative of the people, I have ensured that there is no negligence in development works. However, Congress is not interested in development. It is only interested in controversies.”

The former mayor also said that the Congress leaders in AMC have been given ample time and scope to rake up issues related to development. Despite that, Congress has always blamed the BJP for silencing the Opposition due to which it is not able to rake up citizens’ issues, she said.

Congress rebuts

Attacking the former mayor for her comments, former leader of Opposition in AMC, Kamla Chavda, said that the BJP that was ruling in AMC should have known how to work when in power.

“Congress has reached its present position after 60 long years. Whether it is a local school or a corporation school, all have come under Congress’ regime. Congress has also showcased how to run a party smoothly and play an effective role as the Opposition,” Chavda said.

Gujarat local body elections

The local body elections in Gujarat will be held in two phases. In the first phase on February 21, elections will be held for municipal corporations. The results for the elections will be declared on February 23.

In the second phase on February 28, elections will be organised for municipalities, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats. The results for the second phase will be declared on March 2.

The local body elections are being seen as a crucial ‘semi-final’ before the Assembly election in the state due in 2022.
