After Bihar, bodies found floating in Ganga in Uttar Pradesh

After dead bodies of suspected COVID patients piled up on the banks of Ganga in Bihar’s Chausa, dead bodies washed up on the riverbank in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur located at a distance of 55 km from Chausa.

Ghazipur collector MP Singh said, “We have got the information. Our officers are present on the spot and an investigation is underway. We are trying to find out where they came from.” However, a local resident said that no action has been taken by the administration despite being alerted about the problem.

Authorities in Bihar have blamed Uttar Pradesh for the floating corpses claiming that the state has no tradition of releasing dead bodies in rivers.

The development has created panic among local residents as the second wave of COVID-19 has resulted in longer queues outside hospitals and crematoriums. Local residents say that due to the absence of COVID-19 protocols in rural crematoriums, it is being suspected that the families of the deceased are forced to cosign the bodies in the river.

Union minister asks states to take cognisance

After dozens of bloated and decomposed bodies piled up on the banks of Ganga in Bihar’s Chausa, Union Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has asked the states to take note of the incident.

He tweeted, “The incident of corpses found floating in Ganga in Buxar region of Bihar is unfortunate. This is definitely a matter of investigation. The Modi government is committed to the cleanliness of ”mother” Ganga. This incident is unexpected. The concerned states should take immediate cognizance in this regard.”

Rahul Gandhi slams PM

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday raked up the issue of floating dead bodies in Ganga and long queues outside hospitals on Twitter. He took a dig at the Narendra Modi government for the mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gandhi, in an apparent criticism of PM Modi for going ahead with the Central Vista project despite the pandemic, said, “Countless dead bodies flowing in rivers; lines in hospitals up to miles; the right to life security is taken away! PM, take off those pink goggles that lets you see nothing except for Central Vista.”
